Comparative Analysis of LED and VFD POS Customer Display Screens

September 14, 2024

POS customer displays play a crucial role in enhancing customer interaction during transactions at checkout. Among the available display technologies, LED, VFD, and LCD are commonly used in POS customer displays, with LED and VFD being the most cost-effective options. But what sets these two apart?

Firstly, LED consists of light-emitting diodes, where an LED chip is encased into a lamp bead to emit light. In contrast, VFD technology relies on electrons striking phosphors to generate light. The two have essential differences in their light-emitting methods.

Due to the fact that LED lamp beads are exposed on the surface and the response time of each individual LED element is thousands of times faster than that of a VFD screen, LED POS customers’ displays outperform VFD in terms of brightness. LED can maintain clear visibility even in bright environments, such as outdoors, without issues like glare or poor visibility. Additionally, LEDs allow for precise color adjustment by controlling the red, green, and blue (RGB) components, resulting in a fuller, more vibrant color display for images and videos.

In contrast, VFD technology, as an early customer display solution, is not as bright as LED and usually uses a single blue-green display. It is not as colorful as LED, but VFD has a very fast response speed and can quickly display transaction information. Therefore, it is still often used in POS customer displays. Moreover, since VFD has a relatively simple structure, strong mechanical stability, and long service life, it is suitable for POS customer displays that need to be used continuously for a long time.

From a cost perspective, LED POS customer displays tend to be slightly more expensive than VFDs. but LED POS customer displays have low power consumption and can reduce some operating costs in long-term use. VFD, being a more mature technology, offers a lower upfront cost and is often preferred by businesses with tighter budgets that still require reliable performance.

In summary, LED offers superior brightness and energy efficiency, VFD boasts faster response times and higher durability. The decision to choose between LED or VFD for a POS customer display ultimately depends on the required functionality, the intended operating environment, and the available budget.
