Food service EPOS systems typically feature two displays: a main display for cashier operation and system control, and a customer-facing display for showing prices, payment information, QR codes, or transaction prompts. While the two displays serve different functions, their connection methods are carefully chosen to ensure reliable, uninterrupted system operation.
In all-in-one food service EPOS systems, internal direct connections are the most common and practical solution. Both the main display and the customer display are usually connected directly to the motherboard using embedded display interfaces such as LVDS or eDP. With short cable runs and a fixed internal structure, this approach delivers high signal stability and strong resistance to interference, making it well suited to EPOS systems designed for long operating hours and continuous daily use in food service environments.
USB-based customer displays are also widely used, particularly in more modular food service EPOS systems. In this configuration, the customer-facing screen operates as a USB display device with its own integrated display controller, communicating with the main system via a standard USB connection. This method offers flexibility during installation and servicing, while keeping costs under control and ensuring straightforward compatibility with common operating systems. It is often selected where adjustability or ease of replacement is required.
In certain scenarios, customer displays may be connected via RS-232 serial ports or HDMI interfaces. RS-232 connections are typically used for simple, text-based customer displays and are more common in legacy or traditional food service EPOS systems. HDMI connections, by contrast, are applied where higher-resolution output or richer visual content is needed, such as larger customer screens or specialised display requirements in customised systems.
From a design perspective, food service EPOS systems prioritise stability, reliability, and operational security over frequent hardware changes or broad interchangeability. Unlike general-purpose PCs, EPOS systems are engineered with fixed and protected display connections to minimise the risk of accidental disconnection, loose interfaces, or driver-related issues. This design approach helps ensure consistent checkout performance and dependable information display, reflecting the long-term reliability standards expected of professional food service EPOS hardware.
