UIPOS Tells You How to Start the Firewall on a Windows POS System

October 24, 2024

To ensure the security of your POS system and protect it from potential network threats, enabling the firewall on your Windows POS system is a crucial step. A firewall not only restricts unauthorized access but also monitors data transmission. Before diving into the steps on how to start the firewall, let’s first understand what a firewall is, with UIPOS.

A firewall is a network security tool that manages and monitors incoming and outgoing network traffic according to predefined security rules. Our Windows POS systems handle a lot of sensitive information every day, such as customer payment data and company transaction records. Properly installing and activating the firewall helps prevent unauthorized users from accessing the Windows POS system, thereby reducing the risk of data breaches.

Most Windows POS systems come with a built-in firewall, so the first thing we need to do is check whether the firewall is already enabled. If it’s turned off, you can enable it by following these steps:

Control Panel: The most common and direct way to enable the firewall is through the Control Panel. Go to Control Panel > System and Security > Turn Windows Defender Firewall on or off.

Settings App: You can also quickly enable the firewall through the Settings app. Go to Start Menu > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Firewall & Network Protection, and then select the current network type. When enabling the firewall, ensure that it’s turned on for all network types.

Windows Firewall Troubleshooter: Another option is to use the Windows Firewall Troubleshooter to resolve the issues. Go to Control Panel > System and Security > Windows Firewall, and follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.

Group Policy Settings: Ensure that group policy settings are either set to “Not Configured” or “Enabled”. Press Win + R to open the Run dialogue box, type “gpedit.msc” and press Enter. Then navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Network > Network Connections > Windows Defender Firewall, and adjust the policy settings accordingly.

Enabling the firewall on your Windows POS system is a basic yet essential measure for maintaining system security. Using the methods provided by UIPOS, you can ensure your system is properly protected. If you have any questions or difficulties with these steps, don’t hesitate to contact a professional technician for assistance.
