What is The Difference Between SSD and eMMC?

November 14, 2024

Solid-state drives (SSD) and embedded multimedia cards (eMMC) are two of the more popular storage technologies that have revolutionized the way data is stored and accessed in modern POS hardware. Although both are solid-state storage technologies, there are some key differences between the two.

In terms of form factor and interface, SSDs come in a variety of form factors, including 2.5 inches, M.2, and even smaller sizes for ultra-portable devices. They connect to the POS host system through SATA, PCIe, or NVMe interfaces, which can provide more flexible storage expansion options for modern POS hardware.
eMMC is a chip-level storage solution that is embedded directly into the device’s motherboard. It uses the eMMC interface, which is a subset of the MMC (Multimedia Card) standard. This makes eMMC more compact and suitable for mobile devices with limited space, such as small modern POS hardware, smartphones, and tablets.

In terms of capacity and performance, SSDs generally offer higher storage capacity, ranging from 128GB to several TB. In contrast, eMMC storage is more common in low-end devices and is usually smaller in capacity, typically 32GB or 64GB, so modern POS hardware with SSDs can achieve faster application startup speeds and more responsive multitasking. Although eMMC is faster than traditional hard disk drives (HDDs), it is still slightly inferior to SSDs.

When it comes to durability and endurance, both SSDs and eMMCs are more durable than traditional spinning hard disk drives because they have no moving parts. But when it comes to SSDs and eMMCs, SSDs have a higher durability rating, which means they can withstand more write cycles before wearing out, which is particularly suitable for commercial environments such as large retail stores and supermarkets, while eMMCs may have shorter service life in these high-load environments.

Low-cost eMMC is suitable for consumers with high basic usage frequency, while users who pursue high performance modern POS hardware will tend to choose SSDs. UIPOS provides Windows modern POS hardware solutions that use SSD, while Android modern POS hardware solutions mostly use eMMC.
